Vital QuickStart

1. Charge Headphones — Included with your Vital headphones is a common USB ‘Type-C’ charging cable ( Fig. 1 ).  Insert the small end into the charging port at the bottom of the Right (R) earcup ( Fig. 2 ) and plug the other end into a standard USB wall charger (brick), a computer, or a mobile power supply.

Charge battery overnight. A full charge should provide approximately 8 hours of operation.

2. Download Vital Neuro AppClick on this App Store link ( Fig. 3 ) to put the Vital Neuro App on your iPhone/iPad.

Open Vital Neuro App and Login.

User Name: [Use credentials provided to you]

If you choose to search for it in the App Store, please be sure to type the full name: "Vital Neuro"

3. Power On and Connect — Locate Power button at the bottom of the Right (R) earcup ( Fig. 4 ). Press and hold for 3 seconds. Listen for the “Power On” confirmation. Next you will hear “Pairing” as the headphones attempt to connect with Bluetooth.

Select Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone/iPad. Verify that Bluetooth is turned on ( Fig. 5 ). In the Devices section, select the Vital Headphone appearing as VN-XXXXXX, where the Xs represent the unique ID of the headphones. You should hear “Connected”.

If presented with a pairing request similar to ( Fig. 6 ), select ‘Pair’. Successful pairing will be confirmed when you hear “Connected”. The unique ID will then move into the ‘My Devices’ section ( Fig. 7 )

Close Settings.

4. Properly Place Headphones — When you put on your headphones, be sure that they are correctly oriented. Position them top and center on your head between the middle of your ears—not too far forward, not too far back ( Fig. 8 ). Left-L and Right-R are printed inside the earcups. Adjust the headband for size and comfort.

Notice brain-monitoring sensors in each ear cup ( Fig. 9 ), and
on the headband ( Fig. 10 ). Make sure sensor ‘prongs’ are touching the scalp. Part hair if needed and sweep back any hair around your ears so ear-cup sensors make contact with the skin. Click ‘QuickStart Video’ to see a demo.

What to Expect: During your session you’ll be listening to Vital’s scientifically-designed psychoacoustic music and sounds. And as Vital analyses your brain state activity, you’ll periodically hear added reward feedback tones. These become audible each time you rise above the moving brain-training threshold, and disappear whenever you drop below the threshold—Green when ‘In the Zone’ above ( Fig. 13 ) and Red when ‘Out of the Zone’ below ( Fig. 14 ). This real-time tracking display appears on the right side of the screen ( Fig. 15 ).

5. Start Your Session — Tap the Vital app and choose the state of mind you want to achieve ( Fig. 11 ). The RELAX collection ( Fig. 12 ) for de-stressing, is one of the most popular for first-time use. 

Choose a session from within the collection. They vary in music style and length (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 min.) to suit your listening preferences and schedule. And remember, the more frequently and longer you train, the greater the benefit!

Note: We all have uniquely shaped heads, so for some people a sensor-connection alert might appear in the lower left corner of the session screen ( Fig. 16 ). If so, slightly reposition headphone sensor band, and re-confirm that sensors are touching the scalp and skin in front of ears. You can check the session-data display in the lower left corner anytime to confirm an EEG signal ( Fig. 17 ).

Choosing a Vital Session

When you open the Vital Neuro app, you will select one of the brain-training collections—RELAX, MEDITATION, FOCUS, or OPTIMIZE— and pick from within that collection a session based on how you are feeling, time of day, what you are planning to do in the next few hours, and the state of mind you want to achieve.

Appendix:

Consider activity-specific choices for when you are working, exercising, traveling, creating, performing, socializing, and relaxing. The benefits are huge when you make Vital Neuro sessions part of your regular routine—choosing collections for morning, mid-day, afternoon, early evening, nighttime, or going to bed.

Maximizing Your Vital Experience

• Settle into calm, quiet environment

• No distractions

• Set iPhone/iPad ‘Do Not Disturb’

• Privacy—ask not to be disturbed

• Comfy chair for all sessions

• Adjust to comfortable audio volume

• Recommend 1 hr. between sessions

• Normal activity between sessions

• Dim lighting preferred

• Eyes closed for RELAX/ MEDITATE

• Eyes open for FOCUS/ OPTIMIZE

• Hands free—iPhone/iPad on stand

  or desk with screen still visible

Remember, before you begin a session, make sure your iPhone/ iPad has a stable WiFi/ Cellular Data connection. Then, power on your headphones—a solid white indicator light will appear. After properly positioning headphones, do not move the sensor headband or ear cups, as this may disrupt sensor connection. Also, tensing your facial muscles, or excessive  eye motion, can interfere with the EEG signal. Try to remain still during the session for best results.

During Your Vital Session

Once you have launched the Vital App and selected a state-of-mind Collection, tap the session name to begin. Remain still, take a deep breath, and enjoy the music while Vital Neuro establishes your baseline EEG. This is the current state of your brain activity for the targeted training area. Your EEG is monitored in real time throughout the session, allowing Vital Neuro to personalize and optimize your brain training in real time. You can observe your brain activity in the Session Details display at the bottom left of the session screen ( see Fig. 17 above ) by expanding the display. If you notice the running EEG wave has squared lines, or is a flat line, simply nudge or reposition the sensors to improve contact.

If the condition persists, exit the session ( Fig. 18 ), power cycle your iPhone/iPad and headphones, then begin again.

In and Out of the ‘Zone’

Continue observing the EEG signal and session screen until you hear the reward feedback tones, which become audible each time you rise above the brain-training threshold. Remember, the progress tracking display ( Fig. 13 & 14 above ) appears green when “In the Zone” vs. red when “Out of the Zone”.

Also, the motion-visual feedback will freeze when you are out of the Zone, and resume when in the Zone. This is by design. Once the session is underway with correct sensor placement and EEG (eyes closed for Relax sessions), tune your mind in to the audio reward tones which will also stop and start, become aware of your internal state, and deeply relax.

When your session ends, take a moment to reflect on the sensations you felt. And don’t judge your performance. Be curious and see what you can learn from your Scorecard results.

Your Scorecard

At the end of each Vital session your Scorecard will appear ( Fig. 19 ). The dial at the top displays your overall Vital Score, which is a composite measure combining:
a. 'Time-In-Zone' results ( Fig. 20 ), with

b. 'Peak Shift' effort ( Fig. 22 ).

On a scale from 0-20, the Vital Score represents the amount of change, or shift you achieved into your desired state of mind, throughout the session. So, depending on the type of session you choose, your Vital Score will show: depth of Relaxation, or degree of Focus, or full extent of Optimization. You can use this number to track and compare your progress and performance from session to session. And since it is heavily influenced by session length, a longer session will boost your score.

Lifetime in Zone:

Perhaps the greatest benefit of regularly using Vital Neuro, is how it rewires your brain. The long-term effect of repeated sessions, is the formation of new neuropathways-positive patterns putting you in control of your emotions, mental well-being and happiness. And research shows that beyond consistency, the cumulative benefit is even greater. So, the Scorecard tracks your ongoing Time in Zone ( Fig. 23 ), and notes your evolving Vital persona ( Fig. 24 ), as you accumulate more and more valuable periods of shift into desired states of mind.

What is Time-in-the-Zone?

This score represents an accumulation, during the session, of all the segments where you were above the moving training threshold ( Fig. 21 ), the moment-to-moment mental fitness goal. Being in the zone indicates: deeper Relaxation, increased Focus, or Optimized cognition and executive function. On average, people are in the Zone for 5-7 minutes during a 10-min. session, 8-10 minutes for a 15-min. session, and so forth. In Vital Neuro sample groups, we have observed that a 10-min. daily session has led to reduced stress, improved mood, and better sleep.

What is Peak Shift?

It's a strong indicator of your brain's training effort--the most significant, or foremost change from your beginning baseline ( Fig. 22 ), to the level you achieved during your session. Every shift in the session is measured, to identify the furthest push you made beyond your session average. It's like the fastest lap in a race; or what got the loudest applause from the stage.
